AI assistants
Connecting an assistant
Connect an MCP-compatible AI assistant to FormWork, choose its access and manage or remove the connection.
FormWork provides a remote MCP server. Connect an assistant that supports remote MCP connections with OAuth, then sign in with your own FormWork login.
Find the server address
Open AI assistants near the bottom of FormWork’s sidebar. The server address, with a copy button, is also in Account settings → AI assistants and Profile → Connections.
For the hosted service, use:
https://app.useformwork.com/mcp
On another FormWork installation, use that installation’s address followed by /mcp. This is separate from the REST API’s /api/v1 address.
Connect with your login
- In your assistant, add a custom connector or MCP server and paste the FormWork server address. The name and availability of this option depend on the assistant and your organisation’s settings.
- Start the connection. The assistant opens FormWork’s sign-in and consent page.
- Choose all your accounts, including accounts you join later, or chosen accounts. For chosen accounts, choose all projects or specific projects.
- Choose what the assistant may do. See Permissions and controls.
- Check the assistant and the callback host shown on the consent page, then select Allow.
For Claude or ChatGPT, use the custom connector or MCP server option available in your client. In a managed organisation, an administrator may need to make the connector available before each person signs in. Each person’s connection uses their own FormWork access.
When connected, try:
Show me the projects I can access in FormWork, and ask which one to work in before making changes.
Claude Code
Add the server with the CLI, then use /mcp in Claude Code to sign in:
claude mcp add --transport http formwork https://app.useformwork.com/mcp
Manage your connections
Open Profile → Connections to see the assistants you’ve connected, the accounts each can reach and when each was last used. You can remove one account from a connection or disconnect it completely.
To change the permissions or projects granted, disconnect and connect again with the access you want. Removing your membership of an account also removes that account from your connections.
Account admins can see connections that reach their account in Account settings → AI assistants, remove their account from any connection, and choose the account’s AI setting.
Connect with an API key
For developer tools, an account admin can create an API key with chosen permissions and projects. A key reaches one account; signing in with OAuth is the option for working across several accounts.
For Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http formwork https://app.useformwork.com/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer <your API key>"
Treat configuration containing a key as a secret. Keep it out of shared files and chats. The account’s AI setting applies when a key is used through MCP, including a full-access key. It does not apply to the key’s ordinary REST API requests.
If something is refused
- Check that the account and project are included in your connection.
- Check your FormWork role and the permissions granted when connecting.
- Ask an account admin to check the account’s AI setting.
- If access has been removed or the connection revoked, connect again with the appropriate access.
Allowing a tool call in the assistant doesn’t override FormWork’s permissions. A client that can’t display a form preview or publish card can still use the text results; those cards require MCP Apps support.
